Whenever you stay still, every bullet remains suspended in midair, enemies stick frozen in place, and time itself screeches to a halt. SUPERHOT differentiates itself from this stereotype with one simple idea: time moves only when you do. Most shooters are incredibly hectic affairs, stuffed to the brim with breathless fast-paced action. However, it doesnвЂ™t strive to go above and beyond in the slightest, which is a little disappointing since there was potential for a more in-depth story. It does what it should вЂ“ it provides a little bit of context to the gameвЂ™s bountiful slaughter of red polygons. Likewise, the story can also feel excessively vague, to the point where it hardly makes any sense at all until the very end. Again, this gameplay concept doesnвЂ™t need a deep narrative to drive it forward, but itвЂ™s a shame that the story finishes so quickly, in only a little more than two hours. I played through almost the entirety of the story on a single charge of my SwitchвЂ™s battery вЂ“ and considering how quickly 3D games can drain the standard SwitchвЂ™s battery, that should tell you about the campaignвЂ™s remarkable brevity. Of course, that doesnвЂ™t change the fact that SUPERHOTвЂ™s narrative is super short.

SUPERHOT Review (Switch) вЂ“ The story shatters the fourth wall just as much as youвЂ™ll shatter this red guy ItвЂ™s a story that delights in breaking down the fourth wall between fiction and reality. The game eventually attempts to wrest control away from the player, at times through menacing subliminal messages, and at others through physical harm. Not too far into the story, it becomes clear that this is more than a mere shooter. This friend sends over some files for the game, and the player is soon immersed in the gameвЂ™s stylish action (more on that in the gameplay section.)ДЇittingly enough for a game thatвЂ™s all about manipulating time, SUPERHOTвЂ™s story focuses on a struggle for control.

It opens with an instant message conversation between the player and an unnamed friend, who recommends a вЂњsick shooterвЂќ called SUPERHOT. However, SUPERHOT does indeed have an overarching narrative вЂ“ a vague, slightly confusing one, but a story nonetheless. After all, its core gameplay loop revolves around gunning down faceless red polygons in slow-motion вЂ“ a setup that isnвЂ™t particularly conducive to deep storytelling.
